Zero hour contracts can often have different meanings, but – in general terms, they are casual arrangements between parties where there are no guaranteed working hours, no obligation on the business to provide any hours, and no obligation for the worker to accept the hours offered. Arrangements such as these help to deal with a business’ fluctuating demands.
However, those on zero hour contracts still have certain protections – such as minimum wage rights and whistleblowing protections. Furthermore, under new legislation, these employees also now receive a statutory right to request predictable working patterns.
